Serpico. I swear the first time I heard that title, I thought it was a spy movie. Seriously. Can't you picture it. "Serpico, we need you to infiltrate the Russian Embassy" Only one American spy could have pulled this off......SERPICO!!!!" Was i surprised.
Based upon a true story, Serpico tells the tale of New York Police Officer Frank Serpico. Upon graduating from the Police Academy, Serpico begins to see the corruption running rampant through the department. From station to station, precinct to precinct, it seemed to be everywhere. He may go on the "routes" to pick up the cash, he won't take any of the money. His presence on the runs was to allay the fears of his partners
He brings the activity to the attention of higher authorities. He is rebuked or ignored time and time again as it goes to the Police Commissioner. His personal life begins o implode as he feels more and more powerless to stamp out the corruption and putting his life on the line while being ignored. Finally, the right ally comes to him offering to help in his crusade. After being ignored, Frank is slow to accept. Soon, he reluctantly agrees to help this special "commission". Soon his fears become a reality as his partners decide to not to offer back up as he tries to enter an apartment that is reportedly dealing drugs and his shot in the face.
This movie reminded me how great of an actor Al Pacino can be. He was nominated for his first Best Actor Oscar for playing Frank Serpico. Unfortunately, he lost to Jack Lemmon. The other nominees in 1974 were Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson, and Marlon Brando. That's some stiff competition right there.
Serpico is a definite must watch or revisit. I streamed it on Amazon Prime.
