I was contemplating what to write about. Money in the Bank? I want to wait to see all of the participants first. Drew/C M Punk? This is the feud of the year and they haven't even had a match yet. Seth/Damien? Their gentleman's agreement of if Seth loses, he doesn't challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship as long as Damien is champ or if Damien loses, he says adios to the Judgement Day. All of these are definitely worth talking about. I have decided on option D. D for Dumb, Dunce....
Saturday on Collision Okada faced Ultimo Guerrero in a Continental Championship Eliminator match. A Tony Khan Dream Match Production. AEW die hards are salivating at the prospect of this match. Okada, who has probably seen better days in NJPW, and a 52 year old Lucha Libre Legend. Dream match maybe 5 to 10 years ago. This match though....
First of all, why was Guerrero wearing a mask. He hasn't worn a mask since 2014 when he lost against Atlantis. The answer of course is that Mr. Tony Khan, was somehow surprised that Guerrero did not have a mask with him at the Collisilon taping. Tony Khan. He of the "hardcore internet wrestling community". The IWC's very own Billionaire Dollar Prince. The folks who look down upon folks like me that don't have the breadth of knowledge about Mexican or Japanese wrestling. You would think that Tony would have known this and not expected a masked Guerrero. After what I can imagine is a tantrum, that would put the ones my 2 and 3 year old Gransons to shame, that Guerrero acquiesced to Tony's wishes.
The AEW seamstress quickly made one for Guerrero. Under the time constraints, the mask looked good. Unfortunately, it was a tad too big and hindered Guerrero throughout the match. I thought i even heard him say he couldn't see out of the mask toward the end of the match.
Speaking of the end, Okada goes to unmask Guerrero while they are in the corner. The crowd reacts with astonishment that Okada would do that. The commentators explain that having their mask removed is the ultimate indignity to a masked lucha libre wrestler. How could this be the ultimate indignity to a wrestler who lost his mask 10 years ago and has been wrestling without a mask for the past decade? Tony Schiavone should maybe check in with the "Professor" Mike Tenay and get a refresher course in Mexican wrestling.
Okada finally manages to unmask Guerrero who sold it by trying to cover his face with the mask so the crowd couldn't see his face. A Rainmaker later though and the mask has been lost. The crowd reacts as though they can't believe they witnessed the Lucha Libre Legend being unmasked for the first time. It has been a decade of him wrestling without a match. Folks you didn't see an earth-shattering history making moment in the annals of wrestling. You only witnessed a billionaire's child live out another one of his fantasies a decade too late.
