Based on The Destroyer series of Books, Remo Williams The Adventure begins tells the story of a cop whose life changes in ways he could not imagine. Intended to become a film series, lower than expected revenue from film showings erased those thoughts.

Fred Ward portrays Sam Makin/ Remo Williams. While on duty, Makin's police cruiser is dumped into the bay around New York. Unfortunately, Makin was in the cruiser at the time. With a body never being found, he is presumed dead.

Makin awakens in a hospital bed and is shaken by the fact he no longer recognizes his face. He has been recruited by an agency named CURE. Founded by President Kennedy, CURE works outside the realm of any U.S agency. Basically, he has been voluntold to become a trained assassin. With no wife, children or any known family living, he is the perfect candidate.

Remo is trained in the ways of "Sinjanju" by Chiun. A master assassin and avid soap opera fan, Chuin is first annoyed by his new protege but learns to respect him. Besides learning the profession of assassin, Remo is also taught how to run across water, wet cement, and dodge bullets. Okay, so a little suspension of belief is needed here. Before his training is finished, Remo is tasked to find out about a corrupt weapons procurement program in the Army.

Remo Williams. The film franchise that never was It's a shame. The Adventure Begins is a highly enjoyable escape. With a cast like Wilford Brimley, Fed Ward and Joel Grey, you would think movie goers would have given the film a chance. Unfortunately, not and so a franchise ended before it began.

I never understood why the turn out for this movie was so low. My teenage self absolutely enjoyed this film. I thought it had the right mix of action, humor, and intrigue. Granted the antagonist could have been better. The fight seen on the Statue of Liberty is reason enough to give this movie a try.

It is streaming on TUBI.
