"Shine sweet freedom, shine your light on me" Every time i hear Michael McDonald sing
'Sweet Freedom" the buddy cop movie "Running Scared" is loaded the ole memory bank. Two smart mouthed cops protecting the streets of Chicago. The term Running Scared comes from the, according to the movie, behavior of a cop who is just about to resign/retire from the force. They are trying to do everything they can to not get hurt the last month or so of duty that they are too cautious.
Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines star as two Chicago Police Detectives who are in pursuit of a drug supplier, played by Jimmy Smits, that wants to become the next "Al Capone" After almost being killed and destroying a two year DEA investigation, they are ordered to take a vacation. Their destination is Key West.
While in Key West they are introduced to folks "just watching the sunset" on a pier. After being captivated by the sunset and the surroundings, they start to question why they are still doing a thankless for the past 16 years with nothing to show for it. With an Aunt dying and leaving $40,000 to one and the other deciding to cash out his pension, they decide to open a bar. They just need to survive their last month of duty.
It is an entertaining movie. With Billy Crystal, the one liners are frequent and so are some of his character voices from his stand-up comedy routine. Although more known for his dancing prowess at the time, Gregory Hines is able to match Billy's deliverance. They play off of each other well. If you are a fan of buddy cop movies, you should check it out. Currently it is streaming on Prime Video.
